From February 2026, BNG will only support electronic account statements in CAMT.053 format

From November 2025, Swift will no longer support the MT940 or MT940 structured (MT940s) format. This means that you will need to switch to the standard CAMT.053 format. BNG will continue to support the MT940 format until 1 February 2026, giving you sufficient time to make the transition.

What does this mean for you?

If you use electronic account statements in the MT940 or MT940s format, it is important to switch to the CAMT.053 format. Most accounting packages support this format. Check with your accounting package supplier to see if this is the case for your organisation. If not, you can refer the supplier to the following website. Here you will find the format description of CAMT.053.

Consequences for your booking and transaction codes

Booking and transaction codes are used to identify the correct transaction types in your accounting package. This allows you to distinguish between, for example, a SEPA payment and a foreign payment. With the use of CAMT.053, BNG will only support transaction codes; the booking codes within MT940 will be discontinued.

  • MT940 and booking codes:
If you use MT940, you will use booking codes that are different from those used for CAMT.053. Adjust the booking codes for each transaction type to the transaction codes found in Appendix 1 of the following document (from page 18): BNG Payment Transaction Export Formats

  • MT940s and transaction codes:
If you use MT940s, you use the same transaction codes as those used for CAMT.053 and do not need to change anything for the switch.

Expected changes to the CAMT.053 format in 2026

There are several versions of the CAMT.053 format. BNG currently supports version 2 (CAMT.053.001.002). From the third quarter of 2026/July 2026, BNG is expected to switch to a new payment system and, in addition to the current version 2, we will also support version 8 of CAMT.053 (CAMT.053.001.008). We are currently assessing the impact this will have on our customers. We will inform you about this as soon as possible. BNG will, of course, ensure that this has as little impact as possible on your business operations.
