Human rights policy

At BNG, we believe that sustainability goes beyond climate and the environment. Respecting and safeguarding human rights is an essential part of our social responsibility. That is why we base our human rights policy on the International Bill of Human Rights and the International Labour Organisation's Fundamental Principles on Human Rights (hereinafter referred to as the International Guidelines).

What does BNG understand by human rights?

For us, human rights are about fundamental freedoms and equal treatment. Think of the right to safety, freedom of expression, fair working conditions and equal opportunities regardless of origin, gender or belief. We believe these rights apply to everyone, everywhere.

Our approach: recognising and preventing risks

We take our responsibility seriously. That is why we actively assess whether there are risks of human rights violations within our own organisation and among our customers, suppliers and investment partners. We use a structured approach based on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines Principles on Business and Human Rights. This approach consists of six steps: from risk analysis to monitoring and remediation. In this way, we ensure that we only work with parties that respect human rights and act accordingly.

Practical application

  • Within our own organisation, we promote diversity, inclusion and a safe working environment. This is outlined in our diversity policy
  • For all financing, we assess whether customers comply with human rights
  • We expect our suppliers and business partners to endorse international guidelines
  • We have a complaints mechanism for situations in which human rights may have been violated

Transparancy

Every year, BNG reports on potentially identified human rights risks, mitigating measures and actions taken by BNG in its human rights report. In this way, we contribute to a just and inclusive society, together with our customers, partners and employees. We expect to publish our first human rights report in 2025.

Complaints procedure

BNG recognises the importance of an accessible and effective redress mechanism for situations in which human rights may have been violated. BNG offers a structured process for people who believe that their human rights have been violated (by BNG or BNG's business relations). This process:

  • structures the way in which BNG receives complaints
  • structures how complaints are assessed for admissibility
  • gauges the willingness of all parties to participate in the process
  • gains insight into the main issues and positions of all parties
  • brings parties together to engage in dialogue and, where possible, arrive at appropriate solutions and/or redress.
