Municipal household waste is processed at designated waste-to-energy plants. For decades, BNG has been the partner of public waste processors committed to a circular economy in the Netherlands. We share the government's vision of reducing waste and increasing recycling. BNG serves two types of customers in this sector: waste collectors and waste processors.
Waste collection is a statutory task of local authorities and is often outsourced to entities such as GR, NV and BV. Public entities collect approximately 85% of household waste. These entities are an important focus for BNG. In addition to waste collection, they may also provide services such as landscaping and street cleaning. The commercial waste market is mainly dominated by private entities. Public parties generate less than 20% of their turnover here due to tendering rules. Household waste accounts for only 10-15% of total waste.
Approximately 20% of waste is incinerated in waste-to-energy plants, where sustainable energy and raw materials are recovered. The biogenic fraction, such as food waste and wood, provides renewable energy. There are 12 waste incineration plants in the Netherlands with a capacity of 8.3 million tonnes. On average, 75-80% of the waste is of Dutch origin and 20-25% is imported, mainly from the United Kingdom and Italy.
The circular economy is an important part of developments in public waste collection, with reuse and resource conservation becoming increasingly central. Population growth, changing legislation, nitrogen emissions and trends such as vaping and nitrous oxide are putting pressure on residual waste processing. Certain new waste streams can pose challenges in processing and entail additional risks.
With our many years of experience, we are experts in financing waste collection and processing. We support public organisations and public-private partnerships in which the government has at least a 50 per cent stake, whether or not guaranteed by the government. We offer a wide range of financing products with low interest rates and long terms.
