Energy generation

At BNG, we support the development of sustainable energy generation. We focus on financing solar parks and wind farms for electricity, as well as heat generation from sources such as geothermal energy, aquathermal energy (from surface water, waste water and drinking water) and residual heat. The organisations we do this for are public sector organisations that are at least half owned by a Dutch government body or subject to public control. With our financing options, we help local authorities to realise their energy projects. In this way, we contribute to a greener future for the Netherlands.

Developments in the sector

The realisation of new wind and solar projects is challenging due to a lack of suitable space and the current problems surrounding grid congestion. In addition, new large-scale rooftop solar projects are becoming scarcer because the most suitable roofs are already in use. Due to the above factors, combined with the importance of local support, we are seeing local authorities increasingly taking the initiative to set up energy projects and remaining involved in the operational phase. It is precisely with these projects that BNG wants to make an impact, as our focus is on energy projects in which the public sector has a direct or indirect interest.

Also, heat networks, which make neighbourhoods “gas-free”, must be connected to heat sources such as geothermal energy, aquathermal energy (from surface water, waste water and drinking water) and residual heat. Much attention is being paid to the forthcoming Collective Heating Act and the role that local authorities play in setting up public heating companies. Together with Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG), BNG has actively contributed to these initiatives in recent years.

Financing for sustainability

The Netherlands is facing a major energy transition. BNG is committed to the Energy Agreement. The three main objectives to which we contribute are:

  • Reducing energy consumption
  • Reducing CO2 emissions
  • Increasing the share of renewable energy

In addition, reducing dependence on natural gas is important. As a bank for the public sector, we offer financing solutions for sustainability projects undertaken by governments and public institutions. In this way, we are working together to make the Netherlands more sustainable.
