The municipalities of Apeldoorn, Nieuwegein and Nijmegen have been nominated for the BNG Heritage Award 2024.
Post 65 heritage, the theme of the BNG Heritage Prize 2024, concerns schools, offices, stations, art in public spaces, shopping centres, theatres, residential areas and places of worship built after 1965. This heritage is characteristic of a large part of our living environment. Yet Post-65 heritage, however versatile, is not always popular. For many municipalities, heritage from the period after 1965 is now a point of attention, because the buildings and complexes from this period require renovation, adaptation and, sustainability measures.
From a long list, the jury nominated the municipalities of Apeldoorn, Nieuwegein and Nijmegen. These municipalities stand out because of their active approach to protecting and repurposing Post 65 heritage, but also thanks to their forward-looking and integrated policy, which emphasises how residents experience this relatively young heritage.
Jury chair and King's Commissioner in Noord-Brabant Ina Adema: 'This year, we were once again enthusiastic about the quality of the entries and the motivation of the policy officers involved. Working with the theme of Post-65 heritage has yielded an impressive list of entries from different parts of the country: municipalities that may not immediately spring to mind as heritage municipalities turn out to have a compelling Post-65 story to tell. We look forward to the incognito visits to further investigate these three municipalities!'

The BNG Heritage Award is presented to the municipality that best manages its heritage and involves its residents in an inspiring way. With this award, the Heritage Platform of Kunsten '92 aims to share good examples and inspire other municipalities. Heritage consists of the things that we all consider important to pass on to our children. This includes monumental buildings, archives and collections, historical landscapes, archaeology, museum collections, world heritage sites, windmills, mobile heritage (including sailing heritage), stories and traditions, churches, digital heritage, forts and lines, churches, castles and country estates. The BNG Heritage Prize, worth €25,000, is made possible by the BNG Culture Fund and has been awarded annually since 2010.
The winner of the BNG Heritage Award 2024 will be announced on 6th June 2024, during a symposium organised by and in the municipality of Weert, the winner of 2023.
