IBAN Name Check

The IBAN Name Check compares the IBAN and name in a payment order with the details known to the beneficiary's bank. This reduces the risk of both fraudulent payments and administrative errors. The IBAN Name Check applies to both single and batch payments within SEPA and is fully GDPR compliant.

How does the IBAN Name Check work for single payments?

For single payments, BNG automatically performs an IBAN Name Check and immediately displays a notification. These notifications vary greatly, but essentially fall into a number of fixed categories.

  1. Match; the name matches the name associated with the IBAN held by the beneficiary's bank.
  2. Partial match; the name differs slightly. You will receive a suggestion for the name as it is known to the bank. You can accept this and proceed with the payment. You can also use the initial name.
  3. No match; the name does not match the IBAN known to the bank. This may indicate an error or fraud. You can choose whether or not to execute the payment.
  4. Not executable; the combination of name and IBAN cannot be verified. This may be due to a technical problem or missing data. Check the details carefully. You can choose whether or not to execute the payment.
  5. IBAN is in transfer service: this account holder has transferred to another bank. Ask the account holder for the new IBAN.
  6. IBAN is blocked; The IBAN is blocked. Contact the account holder.

How does the IBAN Name Check work for batch payments?

he IBAN Name Check for batch payments is not mandatory. You decide whether you want to perform this check. It is not possible to perform an IBAN Name Check for direct debit batches.

Please note: For payment batches delivered via a direct channel, such as sFTP, the PSD2 API or via a payroll service provider, an IBAN Name Check is not performed automatically.

You have three options:

  1. Perform the check yourself via a verification platform.
You perform the IBAN Name Check via an external verification platform for customer data. To do this, you enter into an agreement with the relevant platform yourself.
  2. Perform via BNG Payment Transactions
BNG Payment Transactions has been expanded with functionality to perform IBAN Name Checks at batch level. You do not pay any additional costs for this.
  3. Do not perform an IBAN Name Check
You choose not to perform an IBAN Name Check.

When processing batches, notifications may appear at batch level and payment item level.

1. Batch-level notifications

  • Not executed via BNG
It was decided not to perform an IBAN Name Check via BNG, or the batch was delivered via a direct channel.

  • Failed
The IBAN Name Check could not be performed due to a technical issue. You can restart it via the batch details page.

  • Entries without a match
Payment entries without a (partial) match have been found. You can check these via the batch details page.

2. Notifications at payment entry level

  • Match
The name matches the name associated with the IBAN at the beneficiary's bank.

  • Partial match
The name differs slightly. It is not possible to change the name. The accounting package may need to be adjusted.

  • No match
The name does not match the specified IBAN. The item can be removed from the batch.

  • Not executable
The combination of name and IBAN cannot be verified. This may be due to a technical problem or missing data. Please check the data carefully.

You decide whether to execute or cancel the payment after receiving a notification. BNG recommends checking the details in the event of a “partial or no match and not executable” notification. It may be a mistake or perhaps fraud? If you receive a notification, check whether the IBAN is correct. You remain responsible for payments that you have the bank process.
