Euro transfer

At BNG you can transfer euros within the European Union (EU) using Euro transfers. You can rest assured that a transfer will be credited to the beneficiary's account quickly. Within the EU, there is a legal obligation that Euro transfers that comply with the guidelines must be credited to the beneficiary's account within one day.

Guidelines for Euro transfers

You can arrange Euro transfers via BNG Payment Services. It is mandatory to use IBAN for Euro transfers. A BIC is optional. If no BIC or an incorrect BIC is entered, we will make sure that the correct BIC is linked to the IBAN.

With BNG Betalingsverkeer, you can manually enter single euro transfers or import a payment file in XML format (PAIN.001).

Read more about the different file formats here.

Submission of SEPA payment files

Would you like to submit SEPA payment files? We accept the SEPA standard pain.001. Unless stated differently, the latest two versions are always supported. A SEPA batch may contain a maximum of 100,000 items. When importing a payment batch, BNG calculates an integrity check based on an SHA check. This allows you to check whether the batch has been manipulated or modified after export from the financial system and before imported into BNG Payment Transactions.

Direct delivery of payments to Worldline

You can deliver euro transfers directly to Worldline via Worldline's Corporate Payment Service. This mainly concerns salary payments that are processed via service agencies. All euro payments must have a valid signature in BNG Payment Transactions. You need an additional agreement for this service.

Frequently asked questions about payments abroad

What is an IBAN and what is a BIC/SWIFT code?

The IBAN is the European standard for bank account numbers. The IBAN, in combination with a unique code for each bank, known as the SWIFT code or Bank Identifier Code (BIC), ensures that transfers can be processed fully automatically. You can find your own IBAN on your statement.

What is BNG Bank's BIC/SWIFT code?

BNG Bank's BIC is: BNGHNL2G.

How is an IBAN structured?

IBAN numbers in the United Kingdom are made up of a combination of the local account number, a country code, a check digit and a bank code.

Example:

Old UK account number: 0285011111
Bank code: BNGH (first four digits of the BIC)
Check digit: 85 (check digit varies per account)
Country code for the Netherlands: NL
Electronic IBAN: NL85BNGH0285011111
IBAN on paper: IBAN NL85 BNGH 0285011111

When should you book a euro payment as a foreign payment?

Only euro payments to a beneficiary outside the EU must be declared as foreign payments. If you do not have an IBAN and BIC, we advise you to request these from the beneficiary. A foreign BIC can be requested via Swift based on the name and address of the beneficiary's bank. Request a BIC from Swift.

When do you use which cost code?

For payments within the EU, it is best to use “costs shared”. Under payment transaction legislation, banks in the EU may only charge their own clients and may not deduct any costs from the transfer. For payments outside the EU, a foreign bank may deduct costs from the transfer. You can prevent this by using “costs paid by sender”. You then pay these costs to BNG Bank. We settle the costs with the beneficiary's bank.

How long does it take for the money to arrive in a foreign transfer?

A SEPA transfer must be credited to the beneficiary no later than the next working day. Foreign transfers usually take a few days to arrive.

Where do I turn to if I do not have the beneficiary's BIC or IBAN?

We recommend that you always consult the beneficiary first for their BIC or IBAN. For several years now, all banks in the EU have been actively providing their customers with their IBAN and BIC, or supplying them on request. If you have the address of the beneficiary's bank but no BIC, you can find the correct BIC on the Swift website. Request a BIC from Swift.

What information should I include on my international invoices?

We recommend that you include at least your IBAN, the BIC of BNG (BNGHNL2G) and a unique invoice number.

How can I receive foreign transfers to my BNG bank account?

All payments within the EU can be received directly as SEPA payments to your BNG bank account. To do so, provide your IBAN and BIC at BNG to the payer. For some payments in foreign currencies, BNG cannot be reached directly by the payer's bank. In such cases, you can use our account with ING. For further information, please contact our Customer Service department at klantenservice@bngbank.nl.

Does BNG also accept cheques?

As of January 1st 2016, we no longer accept foreign cheques. If you receive a cheque, we recommend that you contact the payer and ask them to pay by bank transfer.
