Sustainability

Sustainability is not a separate pillar, but the core of BNG's strategy. Since our foundation more than a hundred years ago, we have been helping the public sector to solve social challenges. We do this by providing financing on favourable terms and by actively contributing to the major transitions facing the Netherlands.

Progress for people and communities

By investing in the energy transition, affordable housing and sustainable social real estate, we are committed to making concrete progress for people and communities. In doing so, we want to be demonstrably sustainable, provide insight into our performance and be ambitious in our goals.

In doing so, we directly contribute to:

SDG 3: good health and well-being: Healthcare institutions are a structural customer group of BNG. By facilitating investments in healthcare real estate and sustainability, we strengthen the infrastructure of public healthcare — a core task within our social mission.

SDG 4: quality education: Investing in educational facilities is essential for equal opportunities. Because BNG has been financing educational facilities for decades, there is a natural connection here with our mission to make public facilities affordable and future-proof.

SDG 7: affordable and sustainable energy: BNG plays a key role in the energy transition by financing heat networks and solar parks, and making public infrastructure more sustainable. This is not only a policy priority for governments, but also a strategic priority for BNG itself.

SDG 11: sustainable cities and communities: From housing to mobility and infrastructure: BNG finances the backbone of public space. This SDG touches the heart of our loan portfolio and is directly in line with our mission to strengthen municipalities and housing associations.

SDG 13: climate action: Climate policy is interwoven with our strategy. As a bank, we aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with a measurable reduction in CO₂ in our loan portfolio. We also actively encourage our customers to achieve their climate goals — through financing, knowledge and collaboration.

Sustainability goals

BNG has formulated four sustainability goals:

  • BNG finances public facilities on favourable terms
  • BNG finances the construction and sustainability of social housing
  • BNG will be climate neutral by 2050
  • BNG stands for equal treatment and opportunities for all and promotes a healthy work-life balance within its own organisation

Tangible actions towards a sustainable future

Our commitment is evident in numerous initiatives:

  • We support housing associations in making their housing stock more sustainable
  • We assist healthcare institutions and schools with sustainable new construction and renovation
  • We finance district heating networks, solar parks and circular waste processing
  • We issue sustainable and social bonds, enabling investors to contribute to public goals
  • Through the BNG Sustainability Fund, we facilitate the sustainability of sports facilities and other social initiatives
  • We report annually on our customers' CO2e emissions in our Going Green Progress Report

Climate Plan: Going Green

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. That is why we have drawn up the Going Green climate plan. Our goal: to be completely climate neutral by 2050.

Sustainability policy

We only have an indirect influence on our customers' ESG issues. Nevertheless, as the most important financier in the public sector, we play a crucial role in making our customers more sustainable. We use various instruments to ensure that the money we lend generates green and social added value.

Human rights policy

Sustainability goes beyond climate. We believe it is important that human rights are respected – within our own organisation and among our customers and suppliers. We actively assess human rights risks and promote equal opportunities, diversity and a safe working environment.
